If you experience period pain, you've probably tried the usual, ibuprofen, a hot water bottle, lying very still and waiting for it to pass. And while none of those things are wrong, they all have one thing in common, they manage the pain rather than address what's causing it.
Traditional Chinese Medicine takes a different approach. And moxibustion for period pain is one of its most time-tested tools.
Why periods hurt: the TCM explanation
In TCM, pain is almost always a signal of obstruction. Where Qi and blood flow freely, there is no pain. Where they stagnate, pool, slow, or become blocked, pain arises.
For menstrual pain specifically, the primary culprit in TCM is cold invasion. The Uterus meridian and the lower abdomen are particularly vulnerable to cold, whether that's from cold foods and drinks, sitting on cold surfaces, or exposing the lower back and feet to cold air. Over time, this cold contracts the blood vessels, impairs circulation, and causes Qi and blood to stagnate in the lower abdomen.
That stagnation is what creates cramping, the heavy, dragging ache, the clots, the spasms that radiate into the lower back and thighs. The body is trying to move blood that has become constricted by cold.
This is why in TCM culture, keeping the lower body warm during menstruation is not optional, it's foundational. Avoid cold foods. Keep the feet warm. Protect the lower back. These recommendations aren't superstition. They're pattern recognition built over millennia of clinical observation.
How moxibustion addresses period pain at the root
Moxibustion works by applying sustained warmth directly to the affected meridians. For period pain, this typically means the lower abdomen (below the navel) and the lower back, the areas that house the Uterus meridian and the lower Dantian, the body's energetic centre.
The heat from moxibustion does several things simultaneously:
- It expels cold from the uterus, removing the root cause of stagnation
- It warms the meridians, restoring the free flow of Qi
- It moves stagnant blood, easing cramping muscles and reducing clotting
- It calms the nervous system, signalling the body to shift from tension into rest
The result isn't just pain relief, it's the body being given the conditions it needs to do what it's designed to do.
When to use moxibustion in your cycle
Moxibustion for period pain can be used reactively, during your period when cramping is most acute, or preventatively, in the days leading up to it.
During your period
Apply a moxibustion patch to the lower abdomen or lower back at the first sign of cramping. The patch delivers 40–46°C of sustained warmth for up to 4 hours, which is typically enough to ease acute pain and support blood flow through the most difficult part of your cycle.
Before your period (days 25–28)
If you regularly experience severe cramps, using moxibustion in the days before your period begins can help prepare the body. Warming the lower Dantian in the days before menstruation helps prevent cold from accumulating and supports the smooth onset of the cycle.
Moxibustion and herbal bathing, a complementary approach
Moxibustion works beautifully alongside herbal bathing. Where the patch delivers targeted local warmth, a mugwort bath soak provides full-body immersion, warming the entire lower body, supporting circulation systemically, and calming the nervous system from the outside in.
Mugwort (艾叶) is the same herb used in moxibustion, warming, moving, and specifically indicated for women's menstrual health in the TCM tradition. Soaking in mugwort before or during your period is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support the therapy you're doing with the patch.
What to realistically expect
Moxibustion is not an overnight fix, and in TCM, that's not the point. The goal is to address the underlying pattern (cold invasion, Qi stagnation) that's causing the pain, which takes consistent practice over multiple cycles.
Many people notice a meaningful reduction in cramping within one to three cycles of regular use. Others feel relief immediately from the warmth alone. Everyone's constitution and pattern is different.
What you can expect from the first use: warmth that begins within 5–10 minutes, muscles that begin to soften and relax, and a nervous system that, for those 4 hours, is being told it's safe to rest.
That's not nothing. That's exactly where healing starts.
Why Moxibustion Patches?
Moxibustion patches bring generations of wisdom into your everyday life. No smoke, no burning herbs. Just warmth that works with your body's natural rhythms.
